Custom Software vs. Off-the-Shelf: When Laravel + Vue.js Makes Sense

A honest framework for deciding whether your business needs custom software or a configured off-the-shelf tool — and why we build custom on Laravel and Vue.js when it's genuinely warranted.

Custom software is the most expensive answer to most business problems, and about a third of the time it’s the wrong one. Before we quote a custom build, we spend real time checking whether an existing tool — configured properly — would just work.

The question we ask first

Off-the-shelf software, including Odoo’s own modules, covers a huge amount of ground: standard inventory, standard billing, standard CRM workflows. If your process looks broadly like every other business in your industry, there’s a strong chance a configured existing system gets you there faster and cheaper than building from scratch.

Custom software earns its cost when the process is genuinely specific to how you operate — a workflow that doesn’t map onto any existing tool’s assumptions, an integration between systems that don’t normally talk to each other, or a customer-facing product that is itself the business, not just support for it.

Why Laravel and Vue.js

When custom is the right call, we build the backend in Laravel and the frontend in Vue.js. Both are mature, extremely well-documented, and have large, active communities — which matters more than it sounds. It means the code we hand over isn’t tied to a small vendor’s private framework; any competent developer can pick it up, which is exactly what “you own the code” should mean in practice, not just in the contract.

Laravel gives us a clean, testable structure for business logic — the part that has to be correct: pricing rules, permission systems, integrations with your ERP or payment provider. Vue.js gives us a responsive, component-based interface on top of it, so the software that stands between your team and their work is one that gets out of the way quickly.

What “custom” actually covers

In practice, custom builds tend to fall into a few categories: a client-facing portal that needs its own login and its own logic, an internal tool built around a workflow no off-the-shelf system was designed for, or an integration layer that connects your ERP, your website, and a third-party service into one coherent flow. Landflix, our own real estate SaaS platform, is the largest example of this — a full custom product built on this same stack.

How we scope it honestly

Every custom software conversation starts the same way as an ERP conversation: what are you doing today, and where specifically does an existing tool stop working for you? If the honest answer is “an existing tool would work fine with some configuration,” we say so — a smaller invoice from us now is a better outcome than a custom build you didn’t need.

If you’re not sure which side of that line your business is on, send us the details and we’ll give you a straight answer, even if it means we’re not the one building it.
